Thursday, August 11: Eagle on the Yukon River
Eagle is a small community with a hotel, restaurant, store, campground, and visitors center situated on a hill right along the Yukon River. The store owner flies weekly to Fairbanks where he buys provisions, many of which proudly display the Kirkland brand. Just triple the price!
Fishermen on the other side of the river. The flattish looking area used to have big trees which were wiped out in the May 6, 2009 ice backup along with many many homes and businesses. The river rose 45 feet that one day. At the visitor’s center we watched a movie taken by a resident. In it you can hear people laughing at the buildup of the ice flow, never thinking of the possible damage that could occur.
Houses in Eagle can be unusual.
22 wheeler after it passed me.
The river just below Eagle. Peregrine Falcons are making a comeback in the cliffs.
