Recap of Tuesday-Thursday, August 2-4: Anchorage

Departed Larry’s Fishcamp at the usual time.

Arrived at the Antler Store outside of Soldatna where Larry bought a carved antler in the shape of an Eagle, a very popular motif here in Alaska. The owner threw in six castoff moose antler pieces for Trey to chew on.

Arrived at Golden Nugget RV Park just down the street from Costco in Anchorage.

Did laundry at the park.

Dinner was at the raucous Anchorage Brewhouse where we shared a bar table with some of our new best friends. That was better than a 90 minute wait to get a table. Their menu listed the dates cruise ships would be in town. Apparently one was there now and the passengers were hungry. Later we walked around downtown and drove to get the lay of the land and find a few geocaches. There is a nice big park where locals gather for yoga and juggling among other activities.

Betsy after having scored another virtual geocache in a store with the largest chocolate fountain in the world. The bear is there to make sure she doesn’t take it.

Slept soundly.

Wednesday:

Betsy was off early to geocache.

Larry and I walked and did other mundane routine tasks until she returned at noon. Then it was off to Costco. And a failed attempt to find a place to recycle used motor oil. They’re not big on recycling in Alaska. We suspect the recycled materials at federally run campgrounds end up in the landfill. Maybe not?

Betsy took us on another geocaching tour ending on a trail through the woods by a small Forest Service and BLM airport. Lots of signs about bears so I asked a couple I thought might be local about bears in the area. They were getting ready to go jogging and we’re stretching and talking. Turns out they’d only been in Anchorage for six months and were from Tucson! They said bear sightings were pretty common but the one bear seen most often was named (I forget what) and we shouldn’t worry.

Back to the Park for another sound sleep.

Thursday:

Off to the Denali Highway for a couple days of camping on Seattle Creek.

…………

Pictures are of various mushrooms found in the park near one of Betsy’s geocaches and of Betsy at a store where she found another geocache.

Sure is pretty, but edible?
