Wednesday, July 13: Shopping

We left Johnson Crossing fairly early, but stopped for a geocache witching half a mile. This one was located on another World War II truck being used to hold a billboard for a local business. In the Yukon people use whatever is available to get the job done! Unfortunately the mosquitoes had the e same attitude and did everything possible to chew their way through Betsy’s clothes, even entering her mouth in their attempt to extract their pound of blood. They won. Betsy lost.

While the mosquitoes were terrible, the flowers along the road were amazing.

So then it was on to Whitehorse and the Pioneer RV Park in the rain. This stay started with a dead battery on the Jeep despite my meticulous attention to keeping the coach lights on. A jump start solved the problem only to find that our assigned spot was taken by some guys who came in after hours and didn’t register beforehand. Back to the office! Our new site put us within a very short distance of a nice Class A motorhome from Yuma.  How close you ask? Larry’s dad used to say that when you asked someone to “Pass the salt,” and you weren’t sure if it was coming across the table or through the window then you were probably too close to the RV next door. We were too close!

Once set up we took off to charge the Jeep battery and do some shopping. The Canada Superstore filled our needs, which was nice since I really didn’t want to go to a Walmart next door. Walmart just seems so un-Canadian! Don’t forget your own bags, and don’t expect to buy any plastic bags, there aren’t any at the registers. And be sure to have a Looney (Canadian dollar name after prime minister Mulroney; I.e. Looney Mulroney. They rhyme.) or you can’t get a shopping cart!

Afterwards we stopped at Frazier RV Supply for a switch for Larry’s unit, then a few spots for geocaches. And it still wasn’t 1:00 when we put the groceries away. So we headed back into town with a stop at Miles Canton to view a unique constriction of the Yukon River as it wound through lava beds.

Then it was on to a bookstore for me, geocaches for Betsy, and a couple of beers at the Whitehorse Brewery for Larry and me. Unfortunately the brewery had limited seating and none were available so we ended up having a brewski and perogies at another brewery downtown. Betsy had a hard apple cider with her perogies.

Back at the RV Park we just hung out.
