Thursday- Saturday, July 14-16: Haines Alaska

Sorry about missing images  the internet is obviously a problem here

July 14 was a travel day. We left Whitehorse around nine for the five hour drive to Haines, Alaska. Unfortunately we had to turn over our eggs to a very nice US Port of Entry agent from Tucson who has been here 12 years and loves it!  And I thought any native Tucsonan would be freezing to death up here!

We’ve been to Haines before and knew we wanted to stay at the Hitch-up RV Park. It’s very nice with green grass lawns and full hookups including cable tv. The owners are exceptionally nice. The first afternoon here Larry and I did a little driving around to revisit the state park where we stayed the first nights of our previous trip, the brewery to check on hours, and the fish and chips food truck to also check on hours and prices. All was pretty normal except that a piece of halibut had increased from $20 with chips to $24 with chips being extra. That was by pretty much a no-go.

Destroyed airstream of a person from Hawaii who wanted to live in it while he built his home here. Unfortunately he didn’t think carefully enough about Alaska snow load.

Friday Betsy went with us to find a few geocaches along Mud Bay, where locals were gathering clams, and east of town near a well used trail to Mt. Ripinsky, the location of a communications tower, and the other state park at Chilcoot Lake.

Rent a kayak or a really big canoe!

Eagle hanging out near Chilcoot Lake waiting for the salmon to arrive.

“Loo with a View” geocache location.

The view!

We also stopped at a local distillery for some great booze tasting. I left with a liter each of their rye whiskey and award winning gin. A little tipsy, we retreated to the RV park for a nap and later a dinner of Chicken Marsala from Costco.

Saturday we first walked two blocks to the location of the Southeastern Alaska State Fair (Salmon Enchanted Evening) for a fun Farmer’s Market. Many locals showed up and it was fun to hear vendors and customers call each other by name as they exchanged goods for cash. Of course, I couldn’t resist the pies, cookies, bread, and jelly. Sweets are now in stock for a day or three.

Next we hiked to Tangaya Point, a short but beautiful walk through the forest to a beach area Trey loved the walk and even met a few other dogs.

A quick stop at the local fish outlet sent us home with Dungenous crab for dinner. Then it was off to the brewery! A few beers later along with some good conversation and we were ready for another nap.

My early dinner was followed by a long walk through a local eco-trail system where signs asked you not to pick the berries in deference to the local elders and warned of frequent grizzly activity. As if worrying about getting caught poaching a berry was not enough to get you nervous!

We’re off to Tok, Alaska tomorrow, but will likely be somewhere in the Yukon again tomorrow night.
